The dream is always the same. (And no, I’m not at the neighbors house in the shower about to miss my SATs.) I wake up and creep downstairs before anyone else wakes up, open my laptop, click on kindle select reports and see that I have sold 100 books overnight. I can see this dream as clearly as if it really happened…except that it hasn’t, not yet.
But I still keep dreaming. This dream plays into a bigger dream: being able to write as my only career. I have been a teacher for years and I have had some rewarding experiences, but while I am good at what I do, writing is the only job I have ever really wanted. By writing, I mean writing books. And, in order to make that a career, selling books. Don’t get me wrong. I do sell books. I do get royalty checks and as a self pubbed indie, its a good royalty percentage. I just don’t make enough, yet, to retire from teaching art and English.
My oldest son talks a lot about the law of attraction. Wikipedia describes the law of attraction as this : “The law of attraction is the name given to the belief that “like attracts like” and that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, one can bring about positive or negative results This belief is based upon the idea that people and their thoughts are both made from pure energy, and the belief that like energy attracts like energy. One example used by a proponent of the law of attraction is that if a person opened an envelope expecting to see a bill, then the law of attraction would “confirm” those thoughts and contain a bill when opened. A person who decided to instead expect a check might, under the same law, find a check instead of a bill.”
Apparently part of the process of making the law of attraction work is visualizing what you are hoping to attract. In my case, picturing myself as a best selling author. Or at least one who sells enough to do nothing but write. The dream isn’t that far out of reach. I essentially need to double my best months sales every month. That breaks down to about 20-30 books a day. I have ten books and two in the works. If I sold just one of each book in just the US and the UK every day , it could happen.
So here’s the plan. I am still going to work hard writing and marketing but I a choosing to believe I can be successful enough to make the dream come true. One day I really will see those numbers. The only place I will go to work is my beautiful office upstairs. Until then, feel free to help me make it happen. Visit my website at http://www.booksbylynnmurphy.com.
